How to use the gutter installation cost calculator

  1. Enter the gutter and downspout lengths. The gutter calculator works these out and can send them here.
  2. Enter the prices from your quote. Most installers quote per foot. The figures already in the form are examples only.
  3. Tick the extras you need: gutter guards and removal of old gutters.
  4. Set a contingency for repairs that only show up once the old gutters are off.
  5. Enter a quote to see whether it sits above or below your budget.

How the budget is built

Each line = length × your price per foot

Subtotal = gutters + downspouts + guards + removal + repairs + other

Budget = subtotal × (1 + contingency)

Worked example

80 ft of gutter and 20 ft of downspout, example prices

  1. Gutters: 80 ft × $10 = $800.
  2. Downspouts: 20 ft × $12 = $240.
  3. Subtotal = $1,040.
  4. 10% contingency = $104, so the budget is $1,144.

These prices are only examples. Your installer's prices will differ.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Comparing totals, not contents. A cheap quote that leaves out removal or downspouts is not cheaper.
  • No contingency. Soft fascia is common behind old gutters and is only found on the day.
  • Too few downspouts to save money. Overflowing gutters damage siding and foundations, which costs far more.
  • Using national averages. Labor rates and material prices vary widely; budget with local quotes.

Frequently asked questions

How is gutter installation priced?

Installers usually quote per linear foot of gutter, with downspouts priced per foot or per downspout. Guards, removal of old gutters, fascia repairs and corners are often listed separately. Prices vary a lot by region, material and house height, so use quotes from local installers.

What makes gutter installation more expensive?

Material (copper and steel cost more than aluminum or vinyl), seamless versus sectional, a second or third story, a steep or complex roof with many corners, rotten fascia that must be replaced, and add-ons like guards or underground drains.

How much contingency should I add?

About 10% for a straightforward job. If the fascia is old or soft, or you are replacing gutters that have overflowed for years, 15 to 20% is safer, because rot is only visible once the old gutters come off.

Are gutter guards worth it?

Guards reduce how often you clean gutters, which matters most for homes under trees and for two-story houses where cleaning is risky. They do not remove the need for checks, and some designs struggle with pine needles or very heavy rain. Price them as a separate line so you can decide.

How do I compare two gutter quotes?

Make sure both use the same gutter size, material and thickness, the same number of downspouts, and that both include or exclude removal, fascia repairs, guards and haul-away. Then compare the price per foot.
